NEET fraud: MBBS Doctor arrested for forging admit cards, arranging proxies

Samastipur: In connection with the NEET UG 2025 exam fraud case, the Bihar police arrested two individuals, including an MBBS doctor posted at Begusarai jail, for allegedly running a racket in which they arranged proxy candidates who appeared for the national-level medical entrance exam on behalf of the original candidates by using fake admit cards.

The duo reportedly confessed to charging between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh per candidate to replace aspirants who weren't confident of clearing the MBBS entrance exam. These proxies would appear for the exam using fake admit cards.

The accused admitted to facilitating such impersonations at various examination centres in Samastipur and other locations to help the aspirants score well and gain admission to medical colleges.

Following this, the police authorities are now investigating whether they are connected to Sanjeev Mukhiya, the alleged mastermind of the NEET-UG 2024 paper leak, who was arrested by the EOU last month.

According to a latest media report by TNIE, one of the accused, Dr Ranjeet Kumar, is a government doctor posted at Begusarai divisional jail. His associate, Rambabu Malik, is a resident of Darbhanga.

They were nabbed after the police received a tip-off that suspicious people were roaming near many examination centres in their car. Therefore, the police teams kept a close watch around examination centres and at around 10:30 PM on May 4, a suspicious car was seen moving from one centre to another. The district control room alerted local police stations by 10:35 PM, and by 10:55 PM, the vehicle was found parked near Mohanpur bridge.

By 10:57 PM, a police team reached the spot and brought the two individuals in for questioning by 11 PM. Special Investigation Team (SIT) members began their interrogation in the police lock-up around 11:20 PM. The exam was conducted from 2 pm on that day. The next day, on May 5 at 11 AM, both accused were produced before the court and were sent to 14-day judicial custody.

During questioning, the police discovered three mobile phones, a car, and Rs 50,000 in cash in their possession. On checking their phones, they found admit cards of various NEET candidates along with other documents saved in their mobile phones, including admit cards, Aadhaar cards, signatures, and photographs of many candidates related to the NEET-UG 2025 exam.

After quizzing them with more questions, the accused duo confessed to running a racket in which they lured aspirants with promises of securing them admission to medical colleges by sending impersonators to appear for the entrance exam on their behalf.

Town additional superintendent of police (ASP) Sanjay Pandey told TOI, "We are verifying which exam centres in Samastipur were affected. The cellphone recovered from the doctor contained several admit cards, which we are matching with those who sat the exam. A special police team has been formed to pursue further leads."

“Based on the details disclosed during questioning (of the accused) and the evidence found on their phones, we are investigating the suspected genuine and proxy candidates. Only after questioning them will we be able to ascertain how many proxy candidates appeared in the exam, if any,” the ASP told Indian Express.

On May 3, the Patna police arrested a person from Bihar's Araria district for his alleged involvement in duping medical aspirants ahead of the NEET-UG. The arrested fraudster was accused of providing the "question paper" of the exam to the aspirants in exchange for money. The sleuths of the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) and Araria Police picked up the accused on May 3, reports PTI.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of fraudsters were allegedly taking money from NEET aspirants, falsely promising them to provide question paper ahead of the exam, EOU alerted its cyber unit in Araria and the district police. A team was formed and SK Faiz was arrested for duping medical aspirants, the EOU said in a statement. Investigations also revealed that the accused defrauded students and got money transferred to his account from them, it said.
