5 MBBS Students killed in Car Crash in Andhra's Nellore
Nellore: In a devastating road accident, six people lost their lives, including five second-year MBBS students from Narayana Medical College, Nellore. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM near Pothireddypalem village in Kovur mandal.
According to police reports, the students were returning from Buchireddypalem after attending a friend’s sister’s engagement ceremony when their car lost control on a curve near a petrol pump along the Mumbai National Highway. The vehicle veered off the road, rammed into a roadside mound, and crashed into a petty shop attached to a house. The impact was so severe that the car was completely mangled, and emergency responders faced difficulty in retrieving the bodies.
The deceased medical students have been identified as Gundla Jeevan Chandra Reddy (Siddipuram), L. Naresh Naik (Dharmavaram), K. Abhishek Raj (Anantapur), G. Abhishai Purushottam (Tirupati), and Gurram Yagnesh (Ongole). A 65-year-old local resident, N. Venkata Ramanaiah, who was inside the house at the time of the crash, also died on the spot, reports IANS.
Another student, V. Navneeth Shankar from Mydukur, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Narayana Hospital.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep condolences over the tragic incident and assured support to the bereaved families. Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanti Reddy also conveyed their sympathies and called for immediate medical attention for the injured.
Police have registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and initiated a probe to determine the circumstances leading to the crash, as per PTI report,
YSRCP President and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep shock and grief over the accident.
In a statement, he called the loss of young, promising lives "heartbreaking” and urged stringent road safety measures.
“This tragedy shows the urgent need for accountability and prevention,” he said and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
