Nurse found dead at Hooghly Nursing home, family demands CBI probe

Kolkata: In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old nurse was found dead hanging from the ceiling in a room on the third floor at a private nursing home in Singur, Hooghly district. Her family alleged that she was sexually assaulted and murdered as she uncovered irregularities in the operation of the nursing home, but the nursing home administration denied the allegations and claimed that she died by suicide.
Digging into the matter deeply, the police have arrested two men in connection with the case. They have been identified as 21-year-old Radhagobindo Ghatan and 32-year-old Subir Ghora. Both of them were produced in court on Friday and have been sent to police custody for 10 days.
The incident came to light on August 13 when the deceased father received a call from the nursing home authorities around midnight informing him that their daughter had died by suicide and that they should reach the nursing home at the earliest.
The woman, who was a resident of Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district, had joined the nursing home four days back, her family said. They alleged that their daughter did not commit suicide; instead, she was murdered after being sexually assaulted.
When the police reached the spot after being informed about her death, they sent the nurse’s body to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for autopsy. However, the family protested and opposed the decision as they had no faith in the police department. They demanded that the autopsy be done at a central hospital and not a state-run facility.
After 72 hours from her death, the police took her body to AIIMS on Saturday morning and the autopsy began at 10 am in the presence of a magistrate and the nurse’s family members, and the entire process was being video-graphed. The autopsy report is awaited and the reason behind her death could not be determined until the release of the report, as per the Indian Express media report
Speaking on this, her father told HT, “Initially, we were told that the autopsy would be held at Walsh Hospital in Sreerampore. But suddenly we were told that the body would be taken to Kolkata instead. We didn’t want that and were forced to come to Kolkata. We wanted the autopsy to be done either at AIIMS in Kalyani or at the Command Hospital in Kolkata in the presence of a first-class magistrate."
“We have no faith in any post-mortem examination conducted at a state hospital. We want the autopsy to be done at AIIMS Kalyani or Command Hospital, Alipore, to ensure a fair and transparent investigation,” the father demanded.
Family demands CBI probe
The father of the 24-year-old nurse on Saturday rejected claims that his daughter died by suicide and alleged that it was a “pre-planned murder”. Stating that he had no faith in the state police, he demanded a CBI probe into his daughter’s death.
“I want the CBI to probe the death of my daughter. This is not a case of suicide but a pre-planned murder. She was killed and then hung from the ceiling. I don’t have any faith in state police,” the father told PTI.
Expressing anguish, he said, “I want the strictest form of punishment for those responsible. If necessary, I will move court to seek justice.”
State minister Becharam Manna, who is the local TMC MLA, said action will be taken if the police investigation finds any foul play in her death.
The incident comes almost a year after the horrific case on August 8, when a PG medical student was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her half-naked body was later found inside the hospital’s seminar hall.
