Sadiya: Assam's Sadiya Civil Hospital is facing a severe shortage of doctors, leaving nurses to carry out deliveries in their absence. The situation has raised widespread concern among residents, highlighting the severe strain on the state’s healthcare delivery system.
According to the news reports, the alarming incident occurred on August 17th when a 28-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital around 5:30 AM. Her family alleged that despite the urgency of her condition, no doctor attended to her throughout the day. In a desperate situation, nurses were compelled to conduct the delivery themselves.
The incident has ignited widespread concern across Sadiya, raising serious questions about the quality and accessibility of healthcare in the sub-division.

Apu Burhagohain, president of the Asom Jatiotabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), Sadiya unit, described the situation as both “unfortunate and unacceptable.” Speaking to Assam Tribune, he said, “For a long time, the Sadiya Civil Hospital has been functioning without a permanent gynaecologist. Temporary doctors from Tinsukia visit occasionally, but this is nothing more than a stopgap arrangement. We demand immediate appointment of a permanent gynaecologist in Sadiya.”
The issue has been ongoing, and the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer has acknowledged the difficulties. He explained that the hospital once had two permanent doctors in the gynaecology department, but both were reassigned to special duties.
“Since then, the department has been reliant on temporary doctors, who usually arrive only after 2 pm, severely disrupting patient care,” he said, reports the Assam Tribune.
Residents of Sadiya have voiced growing frustration over the deteriorating state of healthcare in the sub-division. Many have called on the state government to immediately intervene by appointing permanent doctors and ensuring that critical departments like gynaecology are fully functional around the clock.
