1169 MBBS, BDS Seats Vacant in Gujarat After Round 1 Counselling
Ahmedabad: Even after the completion of the first round of counselling for MBBS and BDS courses, surprisingly, altogether 1,169 medical and dental seats remain vacant across Gujarat. Among these 1,169 seats, 588 seats are for the MBBS course, while 581 seats are for the BDS courses. The second round of counselling is expected to commence on August 29.
Across the State, altogether 437 Government quota, 120 management quota, and 31 NRI quota MBBS seats are remaining vacant. Among the 581 vacant BDS seats, 521 seats fall under the Government Quota, 51 seats are under the management quota, and one seat is under the NRI quota.
The medical seats have not been filled even at the prestigious BJ Medical College (BJMC) in Ahmedabad. Mirror has reported that altogether 61 MBBS seats are vacant at BJMC Ahmedabad.

Commenting on the issue of seats lying vacant at such a premier medical institute as BJMC, a senior professor told Ahmedabad Mirror that many students have likely opted for the All India Quota seats and get admitted to colleges closer to their homes.
Citing one more unusual reason, he added, "One may find it hard to believe, but an incident of an air crash has also deterred some students and their parents from opting for BJMC."
Medical Dialogues earlier reported that it was a regular afternoon at Ahmedabad's BJ Medical College, where intern doctors and medical students were having lunch in their hostel mess. But in a matter of seconds, the atmosphere was disastrous - Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 people, crashed straight into the hostel building. The incident took place on the 12th of June, 2025.
Witnesses at the scene recall hearing a loud explosion, followed by screams and chaos. Images inside the hostel went viral on social media, showing plates of half-eaten food lying scattered, untouched, which proved that the plane had crashed when the doctors were having their midday meal.
Reportedly, four medical students of BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, lost their lives on the spot when the Air India 171 plane crashed into the top of hostel mess building while they were having their lunch in the afternoon.
