NMC Data shows Karnataka topping MBBS seats, UP with most medical colleges

1,18,190 MBBS seats across 780 medical colleges in India- Karnataka tops MBBS seats, Most medical colleges in UP- NMC data

New Delhi: There are a total of 1,18,190 MBBS seats across 780 medical colleges. The apex medical regulator, the National Medical Commission (NMC), has released the state-wise lists of MBBS, PG medical and Super Speciality seats available across all medical colleges in the country.

According to the NMC data, the highest number of MBBS seats are in Karnataka, while the most medical colleges are currently operational in Uttar Pradesh.

MBBS seats in India:

Altogether, 1,18,190 MBBS seats are available currently across 780 medical colleges in the country. The top states having the maximum number of MBBS seats are Karnataka with the highest number of 12,545 seats, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 12,475 seats, Tamil Nadu with 12,050 and Maharashtra with 11,846 MBBS seats.

Next are the states of Telangana with 9,040 seats followed by Gujarat with 7,250, Andhra Pradesh with 6,785, Rajasthan with 6,476, West Bengal with 5,676, Madhya Pradesh with 5,200, and Kerala with 4,905 MBBS seats for students this year.

The list further drops down to 2,995 seats in Bihar, 2,725 in Odisha, 2,255 in Chhattisgarh, 2,185 in Haryana, 1,850 in Punjab, 1,830 in Puducherry, 1,650 in Assam, 1,497 in Delhi and 1,400 in Uttarakhand.

Jammu & Kashmir comes next on the list with 1,339 MBBS seats, followed by Jharkhand with 1,055 and Himachal Pradesh with 920 seats.

Manipur has 525 MBBS seats at its medical colleges, while Tripura has 425 seats, followed by 200 MBBS seats in Goa and 177 in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Chandigarh and Sikkim have 150 MBBS seats each. Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 114 and Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland each state has 100 MBBS seats.

Medical Colleges in India:

Altogether, 780 Medical colleges are currently operational in India. As per the data, the maximum number of medical colleges are in the state of Uttar Pradesh having 86 institutes.

The top states list further includes Maharashtra with 80 medical colleges, Tamil Nadu with 77 institutes, and Karnataka with 73 medical colleges.

Next are the states of Telangana having 65, Rajasthan 43, Gujarat 41, and Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal both have 38 medical colleges. 34 medical colleges are in Kerala, and 31 are in Madhya Pradesh.

The list drops down to 22 medical colleges in Bihar, 19 in Odisha, 16 in Chhattisgarh, 13 in Haryana, 14 in Assam, 13 in Punjab, 2 in Jammu and Kashmir, 10 in both Delhi and Uttrakhand and 9 in both Jharkhand and Puducherry.

Himachal Pradesh has 8 medical colleges. While Manipur has 4 medical colleges, Tripura has 3, and Meghalya has 2 institutes offering MBBS courses.

There is only 1 medical college each in the states/UT of Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

What does the NMC notice say?

Releasing the lists, the NMC has asked the concerned medical colleges to report any discrepancies to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) within two weeks for immediate rectification. Failure to report the discrepancy can impact the updating of seats, the NMC warned the medical institutes.

“Number of Seats available as on 31-03-2025 in various Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate (Broad Speciality/Super Speciality) courses in Medical Colleges/Institutions under NMC for the A.Y. 2024-25 is provided in the link for information of all stakeholders…
All the Medical Colleges/Institutions are requested to check and verify the number of seats against their colleges and point out discrepancies (if any) along with supporting documents to Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC on the following e-mail ids within 15 days.
Further, failure to report discrepancy, if any, shall impact the updation of students details on the Admission Portal of NMC by respective college/institution.”
