Govt Plans to Launch MBBS at PGIMER Capital Hospital Bhubaneswar

Odisha- The Odisha government is planning to start MBBS courses at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar soon, state Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling said recently while reviewing the infrastructure of the medical college and hospital.
According to a TOI media news report, Mahaling said that there is a proposal by the government to include PGIMER and Capital Hospital in the redevelopment plan. After this, it will become a big medical college in the state capital. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi suggested the Health and Family Welfare Department to start UG (MBBS) courses in this institute. This is in the plan and vision of the state government.
The minister further said that he reviewed the proposal for the complete development of PGIMER. On this, he added, "The ongoing construction of buildings including boys' hostel, girls' hostel, administrative building and lecture halls will be ready by July 31. We are reviewing to expedite the construction work."
Meanwhile, PGIMER and Capital Hospital director Sujata Mishra said the issue of opening an MBBS course in the institute is in the discussion stage. To this, she said, "Now we are running PG courses in our institute. We have 15 approved departments, but eight departments are running PG courses. Other departments will also run courses in a phased manner", reported TOI.
Mishra further said, "Now we have 30 PG seats in the medical institute. The Health Minister reviewed the infrastructure projects of the institute in the presence of several government officials." The institute received the necessary approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) in August 2022 to start PG courses from the 2022 academic session with only 24 PG seats.
