Clash erupts between MBBS interns, nurses at BRD medical college: Report
Uttar Pradesh: A clash reportedly broke out between a nurse and an MBBS intern at the trauma centre of BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, over the issue of carrying an injection.
According to a recent report by Live Hindustan, it has been alleged that the intern called his colleagues and assaulted the student. Enraged, male and female staff nurses immediately went to the principal's office and submitted a complaint to the principal, demanding action.
As per reports, on Thursday, February 26th, at around 2 p.m., an intern doctor from the surgery department arrived at the trauma emergency ward to obtain an injection. It is alleged that he attempted to take the entire package away. The nursing staff on duty stopped him and told him to take only as much medicine as needed, as all medications are recorded in the ward.
This reportedly sparked an argument between the intern doctor and the nursing staff. The nursing staff alleges that after the argument, the intern doctor called his other colleagues. Several intern doctors arrived shortly after, and the atmosphere became tense. The dispute quickly escalated into a violent scuffle between the two sides, reports Live Hindustan
The matter escalated this morning when the nurses gathered near the statue of Baba Raghav Das and began shouting slogans against the administration. The protest severely affected patient care at the medical college. Apart from doctors, no nurses were deployed in the wards. Most of the nurses went on strike. The protest also garnered support from ward boys, pharmacists, lab technicians, clerks, and other staff members.
Other employees also took to the streets. The incident has resonated as far as Lucknow and Delhi. National organisations have joined the protest. The All India Registered Nurses Federation has described the incident as extremely unfortunate, condemnable, and unacceptable, according to a report by LiveHindustan.
Federation National President Suraj Gupta said, "This incident is not just violence against a single nurse, but a direct attack on the dignity of the entire nursing community and healthcare system. This type of violent mentality is unacceptable in a sensitive and service-oriented environment like a hospital."
BRD Principal Dr Ramkumar Jaiswal cancelled his leave and reached the campus at 1 pm on Friday. He first spoke to the protesting nurses. Then he called the intern involved in the incident and took information.
Sadar SDM and the area officer also arrived on Friday. They talked to the principal and returned. The agitation continues in the college, but given the patients' problems, the nursing staff have posted at least one senior nurse in every ward.
