AP: 25 percent of Assistant Professors posts filled through Walk-Ins

Vijayawada: As part of a special recruitment initiative, the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has appointed 41 assistant professors with super-specialist qualifications across 20 Government General and Superspecialty Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh.

With this recruitment, vacancies in the super-specialty assistant professor category have been reduced by 25 per cent. This move comes in response to the ongoing need to fill vacancies in government medical colleges and hospitals across the state.

The 41 candidates were selected after their documents were verified following a walk-in interview. They hold DM and MCH qualifications, along with postgraduate degrees in their respective fields.

An official statement from the Directorate of Medical Education revealed that walk-in interviews were conducted on March 24, and a week later, on Monday, the recruitment of 41 superspecialist doctors was announced following the verification of their documents, The Hindu reports.

It has been reported that the faculty shortage is still an ongoing challenge, but with the latest recruitment, the number of vacancies in this category has been reduced. Previously, 166 positions for Superspecialty Assistant Professors were vacant, contributing to a 45% vacancy rate within the category. Now, the percentage has come down to 25%.

Superspecialty services are being offered across government hospitals in the tertiary healthcare sector in 12 key disciplines. These include Cardiology, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Gastroenterology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neonatology, Pediatric Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and Urology.

As per a recent review by Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar Yadav, there are still substantial gaps in other faculty categories. Of the total 682 sanctioned posts for Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors in the Superspecialty category, 341 positions remain vacant. According to the release, 79 of the 157 Associate Professor positions are vacant, and 60% of the 160 Professor roles are yet to be filled.

To address the gap, the DME will conduct walk-in interviews next week to recruit associate professors and professors for government hospitals.
