46,163 MBBS, 24894 PG medical seats added in last 5 years: MoS Health

New Delhi: Altogether 46,163 MBBS seats and 24,894 postgraduate seats have been added across the country in the last five years, from academic year 2021-22 to 2025-26, the Union Health Minister Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha.
Apart from these, the Minister informed the parliament that a total of 380 MBBS seats and 2849 PG seats were lying vacant in medical colleges across the country in the academic year 2024-25.
The data regarding this was shared by the Minister while responding to the queries raised by a Parliament member who sought to know details of the number of MBBS and PG seats increased in the last five years and the current year, State-wise and year-wise, and the details of permanent posts of faculties increased during the last five years.

He also asked about the details of the number of contractual faculties appointed during the last five years, the details of MBBS and PG seats that went lying vacant during the last five years and the current year, State-wise and year-wise and the details of faculty positions for MBBS and PG medical, lying vacant.
In response, the Minister provided the year-wise details of newly added MBBS and PG seats in the last five years.
As per the data, 8,790 MBBS seats and 4,705 postgraduate (PG) seats were added in the year 2021–22, 7,398 MBBS seats and 2,874 PG seats were added in the year 2022–23, 9,652 MBBS seats and 4,713 PG seats were added in the year 2023–24, 8,641 MBBS seats and 4,186 PG seats were added in the year 2024–25 and 11,682 MBBS seats and 8,416 PG seats in the year 2025–26.

At the same time, several seats remained vacant across the country in the last five years - a total of 141 MBBS seats and 3,744 postgraduate (PG) seats remained vacant in the year 2021-22, 2,027 MBBS seats and 4,400 PG seats were vacant in the year 2022–23, 490 MBBS seats and 3,028 PG seats were vacant in the year 2023–24 and 380 MBBS seats and 2,849 PG seats remained vacant nationwide in the year 2024–25.

Regarding faculty posts, including permanent and contractual appointments, the Minister stated that "Health is a state subject, and matters relating to the engagement, deployment, and management of human resources, including faculty and contractual staff in medical institutions, fall within the jurisdiction and administrative purview of the respective State Governments."
