There are a total of 1,396 MBBS seats and 3,017 postgraduate medical seats available in Delhi, the Union Minister of State for Health, Smt Anupriya Patel, informed the Lok Sabha recently.

Queries related to the seat matrix in Delhi were raised by Parliament member Shri Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who sought to know the total number of medical seats available in the medical colleges in Delhi. Further, Shri Bidhuri also asked whether the Government has conducted any study to find out the required number of medical seats in Delhi, and also asked for the details regarding the number of streams offered in the medical colleges and the number of seats available for each of the streams in those colleges in Delhi.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare recently reiterated the need for implementation of the National Exit Test (NExT) exam to ensure a uniform, standardised assessment of medical graduates across the country.

According to a recent PTI report, in its 167th report presented to the Rajya Sabha, the panel said NExT would bring a paradigm shift in medical education. The Committee also renewed its recommendation for an AIIMS-led mentorship framework, proposing that India be divided into zones with premier institutions such as AIIMS acting as mentor institutes for medical colleges within each zone.

While responding to the queries related to the derecognition of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) courses, the Union Minister of State for Health, Smt Anupriya Patel, informed the Lok Sabha that recognition to medical courses is granted under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019.

Besides, any University or medical institute in India that grants an undergraduate, postgraduate, or super-speciality medical qualification not included in the NMC list may apply to the Apex Medical Commission before starting a course leading to a recognized medical qualification.

CPS Derecognition issue reaches parliament, govt cites NMC Act

A total of 17 individuals, including two Pune-based doctors associated with a private laboratory, have been booked by the Karad city police after it was found that the lab was issuing diagnostic reports signed by a pathologist, even though no tests were ever conducted or supervised.

The FIR was filed by Dr Yadav, a 52-year-old qualified pathologist, who had been running Pathology Laboratory in Karad since 2006. After discovering that a private laboratory was involved in duping patients, Dr. Yadav filed a complaint in this regard.
