Health Ministry appoints part-time members of NMC

The Union Health Ministry has announced the appointment of part-time members of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, participated in the appointment process for part-time members of the NMC, Autonomous Boards, and the Search Committee, conducted through a draw of lots.

The procedure of appointments is laid down in the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019. According to the NMC Act 2019, these appointments are made for a period of two years.

The draw included appointments in several categories. Ten part-time members were selected from the nominees of State and Union Territory governments who were earlier part of the Medical Advisory Council. The states and UTs represented in this group include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Chandigarh, and Madhya Pradesh.

Private Medical Colleges Liable to pay In-service doctors only Stipend, not Salary: Madras HC

A Division bench of the Madras High Court recently ruled that self-financing private medical colleges are liable to pay only stipend and not salary to the in-service government doctors, who pursue postgraduation and super-speciality courses in medicine.

While considering the issue concerning Karpaga Vinayaga Medical College at Muduranthakam in Chengalpet, a single judge bench had held the medical college liable to pay salary to the in-service doctors, as paid to the service doctors undergoing PG and super-speciality courses in government medical institutes.

However, when the college challenged the Single Judge-bench order before a Division bench of the High Court, the latter held,"We are therefore unable to sustain the conclusion of the learned Single Judge to the effect that in-service Doctors pursuing their higher education in Private Medical Colleges would be entitled to payment of the salary that was paid to them by the Government, while they were in services of the Government as remuneration during the period when they pursue their higher education in Private Medical College Hospitals. We make it clear that while the liability to pay remuneration is on the Colleges, the extent of the liability will be only to pay the stipend as fixed by the Government for other students in Government Medical Colleges as well as Private Medical Colleges."

NO Re-exam for NEET candidates affected by power outage- MP HC sets aside order

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has set aside a previous order passed by a single judge-bench directing the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct a re-test of the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2025 exam for the candidates in Indore and Ujjain, who were affected by power outage at the exam centres.

Even though the Division bench of Justices Vivek Rusia and Binod Kumar Dwivedi did not grant any relief to the petitioner candidates, who claimed that their performance was affected due to power outage during the examination, the bench directed NTA along with local administration of each district to ensure that all measures, especially the continuity of power supply is arranged in the future.

"In order to avoid such a situation in future, NTA as well as the local administration of each district are directed to ensure that all the measures, especially the continuity of power supply by way of regular supply or by way of alternate mode of supply, proper sitting arrangement, availability of air and cooling etc. It is the responsibility of the local administration to prepare the list of centres which can be used for these types of important examinations by any of the agencies," ordered the HC Division bench.

21 Gujarat Hospitals Suspended from PMJAY

Following the Khyati Hospital scam, the Gujarat health department has suspended 21 hospitals from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) between April and June 2025 for serious irregularities and violations of protocols.

According to the news reports, five hospitals were suspended in April and four in June, reflecting the government's ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in the implementation of PMJAY.

The suspended hospitals faced serious allegations such as inflating medical bills, tampering with patient records, and failing to meet basic infrastructure and safety standards. In many instances, hospitals were found admitting patients referred from other institutions—against PMJAY protocol—and selecting high-cost treatment packages unnecessarily, especially in neonatal care.

Several hospitals recorded unusually high mortality rates, raising concerns about the quality of care provided. Additionally, many facilities were found lacking in basic infrastructure and safety standards, such as operating without fire safety NOCs, the absence of CCTV surveillance in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), and poor hygiene in operation theatres. Some hospitals were also running operations on floors that did not have the required Building Use (BU) permissions.
